Children today face enormous barriers in their emotional, social, and intellectual development. Educational achievement is a key determinant of future life chances, but underserved children tend to do worse by many academic measures.

Empirical research suggests that, religious influences for children, youth and young adults especially in underserved communities help to counter negative individual and social influences. On average those influences lower rates of suicide, non-marital childbearing, educational failure, juvenile delinquency, drug and alcohol abuse.
